Asant is a young commoner. His desires for what others have gets the better of him and leads him to agree to robbing a bank with a friend. Yet, those same desires are not strong enough for him to see it through, as he walks out of the bank at the last seconds. He roams the streets aimlessly and eventually returns to his mentor and caretaker.As much as Asant tries to avoid the subject, the mentor sees through him, and lays out Asant’s choice of having to face the consequences of his attempt. Either way, Asant will not be allowed to remain under his mentor’s care.Fearing torture in jail, Asant chooses to escape and leave his birth country. His mentor reiterates that it is Asant’s choice alone, and then suggests that Asant focus on doing a tremendous good such as helping a people in need and suffering from war. Asant begins a trek on foot to Siljap—a distant country entrenched in conflict. At first, it is his fears that seem to guide him. Then, near the first border, he meets Ismael—a porter advertising services to carry belongings across the border. In spite of Asant’s rejections, Ismael is persistent.Together, and with help from a caravan, they reach Siljap. There, Asant comes across a nomadic tribe whose members are experts in reading the stars. They advise Asant to seek one person in particular and to work with him. After connecting one clue to another, person after person, Asant and Ismael finally find that fated person and implore him to help address the violent conflict. At every turn, their attempts seem futile, dangerous, entangled in disagreements among factions, and eventually land them all in jail. Nonetheless, each in his own way persists with attempts, finally achieving a commitment to meet with Siljap’s leader and ultimate decision-maker.
